Kielder Marathon celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, with some famous faces joining the celebrations...

Sunday 27 April marked a historic day for distance running in the UK, as an estimated 90,000 runners laced up for either the London or Manchester Marathon - making it the country’s biggest ever day of marathon participation. But while the spotlight shone on two of the UK’s biggest cities, another marathon is quietly preparing to offer something very different this autumn.

The Altra Kielder Marathon, often dubbed 'Britain’s most beautiful marathon', returns this October for its 15th anniversary, offering runners an immersive off-road experience in the heart of Northumberland. Unlike the tarmac routes of London and Manchester, Kielder delivers 26.2 miles of peaceful trails, forest tracks and sweeping lakeside views around the stunning Kielder Water.

With just 3,500 participants expected across the weekend, the event promises a relaxed, intimate atmosphere for runners and spectators alike. The marathon is part of a wider festival of endurance that includes a 10K, half marathon, gravel duathlon and junior races - making it a true celebration of outdoor sport for all ages and abilities.

Running royalty will also be among the field in 2025. Paula Radcliffe, who famously broke the marathon world record in 2003, is set to take part to mark the event’s milestone year. Having completed the final of the Six World Marathon Majors in Boston this spring, Radcliffe has now retired from elite road racing but will run Kielder in celebration of her lifelong love for the sport. She will be joined by other familiar names including broadcaster Sophie Raworth, fitness icon Nell McAndrew and Olympic curling champion Eve Muirhead.

The event, organised by Events of the North, has grown steadily since its inception, attracting runners from across the UK and as far afield as the Netherlands, Australia and the USA. With lakeside Instagram-worthy moments, peaceful natural surroundings and trails that challenge both body and mind, the Kielder Marathon stands out as a must-run for those looking to swap cityscapes for pine forests and fresh air.
