Kelly's Guildford 10K start 2022

Steve rules as charity wins

No snowflakes among the Kelly's Guildford 10K competitors

Storm Eunice, the brunt of which was felt on Friday (18 February) brought about a few cancellations at the weekend but the University of Surrey Students' Union are no snowflakes and their annual Kelly's Guildford 10K and 5K went ahead as scheduled on Saturday, despite continuing high winds in the aftermath of the storm.

Kelly's Storage Charity Events, working in partnership with Eventrac, provided the race management expertise for this important charity fundraiser. With Kelly's Storage Charity Events covering all costs, 100% of the money raised goes to good causes, with an £18,000 target expected to be achieved for the Students' Union chosen charities The Rainbow Trust, The Alzheimer's Society, and Oakleaf Enterprise.

One of the more unusual features of this event is the complimentary seven-day pass to Nuffield Health in Guildford for all participants (and a friend) while all runners were entered into a prize draw to win three months free membership for two people, complete with a health MOT.

The 10K started 10 minutes ahead of the 5K and took the competitors on a tour of the University of Surrey's Stag Hill Campus and beyond to enjoy a stretch along the River Wey towpath and past some of Guildford's iconic sights like the Gothic Revival style Guildford Cathedral.

Just four men broke 40 minutes on the multi-terrain course. Steve Rule (37:14) was in charge from the off and was followed home by Jack Stracey (38:21), James Garland (Team Surrey, 38:21) and Max Williams (Team Surrey, 38:22).

Kate McCully (51:08) was close to 5:00/km pace to take the women's race from Viola Tam (Phoenix Bootcamp, 51:39) and Julia Munn (52:11). There were 165 finishers in 1:44:34.

The 5K option was less popular – somewhat surprising with so many parkruns cancelled – and was contested by 32 athletes, with Luke Triccas (17:56) and Alice Cox-Rusbridge (22:26) setting the pace.
