Jonny Mellor Wins Stockport 10

Jonny Mellor smashes it at Stockport 10

Jonny Mellor ended his year on a high with victory and a new course record at Sunday’s (15 December) Stockport 10. The elite distance runner and coach was on top form as he powered his way around the testing course.

Jonny was part of a 1,000-strong field who gathered on a dry, chilly morning at the Woodbank Stadium for the start of the Stockport 10 Mile. A tough race that includes two climbs, it attracts a mix of top club runners and newcomers and there is a generous prize list along with equally generous goody bags for the finishers. It was organised by Stockport Harriers & AC and chip timed by Crazy Legs Events.

The pre (and post-race) briefing was conducted by local businessman, charity fundraiser and Stockport Harrier Barry Thompson. Then at 10am they were sent on their way from the Stadium along roads apart from a short off-road section and two hills at 5 miles and 8 miles. It was well supported by the local community and the marshals did a sterling job.

Flying feet from Jonny Mellor of Liverpool Harriers saw him win the race in a blistering 49:23 – beating the course record by 38 seconds. Nigel Martin of Sale Harriers was second in 51:45 followed by teammate Nicholas Barry in 52:36.

There was a strong run by Veleska Wills of Derby AC who was the winning female in 1:01:22. Vicki Cronin of Trafford AC took second in 1:03:37 and Gemma Barnett of Vale Royal AC third in 1:06:37.

£450 was raised for charity partner Stockport Foodbank. In addition to this were donations of food and toiletries that will help a great many people in need.
