Runners Finishing At The Thornbury 10K

Runners go for glory at Thornbury 10K

Over 300 runners gave their legs an evening workout at the sold out Thornbury 10K last night (Thursday 11 July). where there was the course record to aim for.

This was one of three races organised by Thornbury RC, the other two being the Riverbank Rollick and the Oldbury Power 10 Miler. All of which are held in South Gloucestershire.

The Thornbury 10K is advertised as a ‘very competitive’ road race and demand for places was high with the event selling out in a record nine hours. One incentive was the £100 prize for any runner who broke the men’s and women’s course record – both of which have stood for a long period of time.

While it catered to those chasing a top three finish, age category win or a PB, the organisers welcomed anyone new to the distance or looking to take it easy. There was no cut off time and several members from the host club took part, providing encouragement throughout.

The race started at 7.30pm on a warm summer evening as runners followed an undulating course on quiet country lanes. Despite the temperatures many kept enough in the tank for sprints across the finish line.

Gavin Jones of Monross Trailblazers won the men's race in 35:03. Owen Parry of Gloucester AC was second in 36:00 with Andrew Kirkup of Wotton Runners third in 36:27.

Susan Duncan of Weston AC was the fastest female in 39:35. Taryn Roberts of Thornbury RC came second in 40:23 and Vicky Tester of Westbury Harriers third in 40:45.

The men’s and women’s course record still stand.
