Five sleeps to go until Gelston 5 Mile Road Race

Runners in the Borders looking for mid-week mid-summer challenge still have time to enter the Gelston Road Race next Tuesday (July 23rd).

The event, organised by Solway Running Club in association with the Dumfries Running Club, is known for its ‘friendly and supportive atmosphere’ and has been called ‘a perfect way to spend a summer’s evening’.

The race, which starts at 7pm at Lochside Park, is part of Castle Douglas Civic Week.

The certified five-mile route winds through quiet – but undulating – country roads passing through the village of Gelston just outside Castle Douglas. After an uphill section around halfway, runners can enjoy a downhill finish – and the cheers of their supporters – at Carlingwark Loch.

A cooling breeze on an otherwise humid day at last year’s event meant some good times. Leading the field home was Gary Flannigan (Galloway Harriers) in 28.53, with Scott Sloan second (29.16).

The ladies’ race was won by Dumfries-born Team GB modern pentathlete Jo Muir (30.16), who finished eighth overall and nearly three minutes ahead of second lady, Donna Burnett.

Entries can be made on the day, but organisers prefer they are made in advance through Entry Central.
