Run like the Wind(farm)

Summer didn’t get the memo on Friday night, as 600 runners and dozens of volunteers taking part in the Run the Blades 10K got soaked to the skin.

The sold-out event, which also incorporated a half-marathon and 50k ultra (run on the Saturday), is held exclusively within the UK’s largest onshore wind farm, Whitelee Wind Farm near Eaglesham.

Each of the three routes presented its own challenges, not least of which was the sound of the turbines – which some runners said they found relaxing – 140 metres above the runners’ heads.

Participants in all three of this year’s races praised the event’s scenic and challenging courses – and especially its organisation, marshals and well-thought out route signage. One runner, who took a wrong turn, particularly appreciated the signs advising them to turn back!

The post-race bling – and goody bag groaning with swag – came in for particular praise.

The 10K was won by Miguel Delgado Sillero (35.15), with first lady being Julie Beveridge of Calderglen Harriers (41.41).

Saturday's Half Marathon was won by Lasswade AC’s Martin Gore (1.22.14), with Scotland international and Team GB 2012 marathoner Freya Ross (Falkirk Victoria Harriers) taking the women’s race (1.24.02) and second overall.

The 50k ultra prizw went to Dusseldorf-based Nikki Johnstone (LAZ Puma Rhein/ASICS FrontRunner) (3.13.52), who incidentally, holds the record for the fastest marathon dressed as Elvis Presley (2.37.04). First lady was Toni McIntosh, who also finished third overall (3.55.26).
