Thanet Roadrunners Get To The Heart of The Matter

Brilliant initiative from Kent based running club

Kent based running club Thanet Roadrunners have been mapping the location of AEDs on popular running routes around Thanet. And what exactly is an AED I hear you say? Well, an AED is an 'automated external defibrillator' and there are over 40 publicly accessible AEDs in Thanet, but would you know where they were in an emergency?

The club are running a competition, starting at 7pm today (Friday 16 September), on their Facebook page, testing local knowledge and observation skills. They will publish a number of photographs of publicly accessible AEDs in Thanet and ask you where they are located.

All you need to do is 'like' their page then name the locations. There is no limit to the number of guesses!  The no 1 rated on TripAdvisor Albion House Hotel, Ramsgate have generously donated a prize of breakfast for two for the winner but much more importantly, you could save a life through your local knowledge.

Last year, an average of 460 people per day died due to heart and circulatory problems - that's a staggering 170,000 people a year in Britain.  The survival rate for someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest decreases by 10% every minute. Using a defibrillator whilst you wait for the emergency services to arrive will more than likely save a life.

Research also shows that those who suffered an out of hospital cardiac arrest had a survival rate of 56%. Using a defibrillator and delivering CPR straight away could help increase this figure even more. You should still always remember to call an ambulance immediately but knowing the location of your nearest AED and being able to administer CPR before the ambulance arrives could just help save someone's life.

Thanet Roadrunners competition starts at 7pm tonight. Good luck!
