There were fast times at the front, but the biggest number in Glasgow this weekend was 35,000.

A record 35,000 runners took part across the AJ Bell Great Scottish Run weekend, making the 2026 staging the biggest in the event's history. More than 2,000 of them were youngsters who got proceedings underway at Saturday's Junior and Mini events on Glasgow Green.

Sunday belonged to the 10K and half marathon. Runners streamed away from St Vincent Street before eventually reaching a finish beneath the McLennan Arch on Glasgow Green, with thousands of supporters providing the noise along the way.

At the sharp end, Central Athletics Club's Jamie Crowe won the half marathon in 1:03:27, ahead of Jamie Burns (1:05:24) and Dougie Selman (1:06:52). Katrina Ballantyne of Leeds City Athletic Club took the women's title in 1:13:33, with Brogan Wallace second in 1:15:16 and Amy Frankland third in 1:16:00.

Lewis Hannigan won the men's 10K in 29:32 and Nancy Scott led the women home in 33:27, while Kyle Brotherton won the men's wheelchair 10K in 31:17.

For most of the field, however, Sunday was about something entirely different. Thousands were raising money for causes close to them, while the field included everything from a knight running the 10K in full plate armour to Shrek carrying Donkey and runners wearing traffic cones in tribute to Glasgow's famous Duke of Wellington statue.

Four-time Olympian Eilish McColgan started the half marathon, while Tartan Trekker Craig Ferguson sent off the 10K before joining the half marathon himself.

From 2,000 children on Saturday to tens of thousands taking over Glasgow on Sunday, this was mass participation running on a huge scale.

And Glasgow has already set the date to do it again: 2-3 October 2027.
