Training for the 2027 Edinburgh Half Marathon? Here are 10 common running injuries to watch for as you build towards race day...

This relates to: Edinburgh Half Marathon

Training for the Edinburgh Half Marathon is a journey, and for runners targeting the 2027 race, the months ahead provide plenty of time to build fitness gradually.

Part of Edinburgh Marathon Festival weekend, the half marathon is a major target for runners of all abilities. But increasing training volume also increases the importance of looking after your body. Many common running injuries develop gradually through overuse, biomechanics or inadequate recovery.

Here are 10 to watch for as your Edinburgh training progresses.

Runner's Knee causes pain around the kneecap and can be associated with weak quads and poor hip control. Strength work and gradual mileage increases can help.

Shin Splints cause pain along the shin following repeated stress on the tibia. Avoid sudden jumps in training and work on calf strength.

Achilles Tendinopathy often appears as pain or stiffness around the Achilles tendon. Calf strengthening and introducing faster running gradually can reduce the risk.

Plantar Fasciitis commonly causes heel pain, particularly first thing in the morning. Mobility work and appropriate, supportive footwear can help.

IT Band Syndrome typically causes pain on the outside of the knee. Glute and hip strengthening can form an important part of prevention.

Stress Fractures result from repeated loading of the bones without sufficient recovery. Rest, good nutrition and gradual training progression are important.

Hip Flexor Strain can be associated with tightness around the hips. Regular mobility work can help runners maintain movement as their mileage increases.

Lower Back Pain can become an issue as fatigue builds. Core strength and maintaining good running posture can help.

Ankle Sprains are particularly common on uneven surfaces. Balance and ankle stability exercises can make runners more resilient.

Hamstring Strains can occur when the muscles are overloaded, particularly during faster running. Strength work and introducing speed gradually can help reduce the risk.

There is plenty of time between now and the Edinburgh Half Marathon to build towards 13.1 miles. Consistency matters more than rushing the process, so increase training gradually, include strength and recovery, and listen when your body tells you something isn't right.
