Cheer For Chester
Chester's premier running event is back in business this weekend...
Sunday will see Chester welcoming runners back to its streets and surrounding area with over 4,000 athletes entered in the Essar Chester Half Marathon and family fun run. The ever-popular event promises to show off the best of the historic city which certainly includes the people of the city themselves.
Joint Race Organiser Chris Hulse said: “Thousands of runners will head out from the Racecourse at 9am to wind through the city taking in the Watergate, the Rows and Cathedral before venturing out into the countryside via the Northgate.”
Organisers are hoping that Cestrians will turn out en masse to offer support and add to the buzzing race day atmosphere. Whilst the elite runners will finish the race in just over an hour, the majority of entrants will take up to two hours and more, providing plenty of opportunity for spectating and high fives.
Chris continued: “Runners come from far and wide to participate in our award-winning half marathon, joining an impressive local contingent.
“We have a fantastic finish area outside the Town Hall, which produces an atmosphere that is second to none. Besides giving much appreciated support to the runners heading down Northgate Street, the spectators undoubtedly share their triumph at completing the 13.1 mile challenge.”
“We are delighted to put the chaos of the last 18 months largely behind us and get back to doing what we love. We know that many people have been eager to take part in mass participation events again. They will find our socially distanced start both welcoming and reassuring.”
It is expected that the runners will raise over £500,000 for charity and while Northern Lights is the official race charity, a myriad other great causes are supported by runners. The event will remain open for entries until midnight on Saturday 18 September, so there is still time to grab yourself a place!
