Look sharp to run the Virtual Hedgehog Half Marathon

There are a limited number of places remaining in the Virtual Hedgehog Half Marathon

Whilst the Hedgehog Half Marathon has been cancelled as a result of an increase in the number of cases of Covid-19, there is the option to enter the virtual event although places are selling out fast. This is your chance to run 13.1 miles by midnight 12 October and help the small, spiny patients at Andrew’s Hedgehog Hospital.

The cancellation of this popular event was a shock for Curly’s Athletes who had staged the successful, Covid-secure Normanby Hall 10K a few weeks earlier. This was a positive sign for the return of live races and the situation was looking positive ahead of Hedgehog Half Marathon 2020 (on 4 October) but then an increase in the R number forced a change of plan. This half marathon also fundraises for the hedgehog hospital and they like many other charities have been adversely affected by the pandemic.

However, Curly’s Athletes are a resourceful team and putting their heads together, devised a virtual option that continues to support the hedgehogs as well as their runners. Participants sign up and complete the distance all in one go or break it down over several sessions and are actively encouraged to post photos of their efforts especially if they wear hedgehog fancy dress on social media. They can submit their results in one of two ways: ‘evidence based’ if using technology or ‘honesty based’ if they prefer an old school approach and will be sent a medal in return.

Those runners who had entered the live race are automatically transferred over to the virtual event and receive a medal and a cake bake plus a ‘Team Curly’s’ long sleeved running top and buff. The organisers will make a donation to Andrew’s Hedgehog Hospital.

For more information about the virtual event and to enter, visit the Curly’s Athletes website.
