Ultra Fun Up North

Is it time to dip your toe in the world of ultra running?

As spring marathon season comes to an end, how about turning your attentions to an even greater challenge? Ultra North makes its return to the North East this July (15th) and makes an ideal option for runners looking to discover new local routes as well as those looking to take on their first Ultra distance event.

Those taking part will enjoy stunning views, historic landmarks and hidden gems of the North East on a fully marked course with easy access in and out of Newcastle. Starting and finishing in the amazing Derwenthaugh Park, this is a route that celebrates the north east from its industrial heritage to today's renewal and reinvention.

This event offers a unique opportunity to explore the blend of urban, railway and woodland trails that the North East has to offer. A spokesperson from Ultra North said: "Many of Newcastle’s landmarks are world famous of course, but we also wanted the opportunity to showcase the hidden gems that the region has to offer."

There are two distances on offer - 25K and 55K, both of which will take runners off the beaten track. Starting and finishing within Derwenthaugh Park, the 55K route follows the south side of the river through Gateshead, crossing the Millennium Bridge, then follows the north side of the river to Wylam, before heading back into the Derwent Valley, using the Derwent Walk to reach the finish line.

The 25K route starts from Derwenthaugh Park, heading to the River Tyne, then south along the Derwent River, before climbing up the Valley side then west towards Highfield. A loop around Rowlands Gill leads back to Derwent Walk then back into Derwenthaugh Park and the finish.

Previous participant Jeremy, commented: "I really liked the mix of surfaces and surroundings from city to forest. Very good pit stops, great selection of food and drinks, with extremely helpful staff too."
