Time Running Out For Tunnel
After a year of tasting the autumn weather due to road restrictions, BTR Liverpool’s popular Mersey Tunnel 10K has booked a new spring date and the event is just around the corner (Sunday 15 April).
Those looking to take part in this unique race, which takes participants though one of Merseyside’s most famous landmarks, have a week (Thursday 12 April) until registration closes.
Next week’s 10k starts on the Liverpool side of the River Mersey and heads straight into the Kingsway (Wallasey) Tunnel from the off and the first mile is a fast and furious downhill. Runners then exit the tunnel after just two miles on the Wirral side of the river before following a flat route overlooking the river before a fantastic finish line at New Brighton.
2017 saw over 2,000 runners take part and a new course record holder crowned with Liverpool Pembroke’s Kirsty Longley, a regular at BTR’s events, slice 70 seconds off the previous time to take first in the female competition in 36:49. Mersey Tri’s Ian Lawton secured top spot in the men’s field in 33:30.
With conditions once again likely to be cooler than the usual summer date, there is every chance the Mersey Tunnel 10K could see another course record broken this time round.
Registration for the race is priced at just £23 and is available here.
