16,000 runners prepare for The Big Half
McColgan, Farah and Wier headline the elite entries for The Big Half
Commonwealth 10,000m champion Eilish McColgan; multiple Olympic and World Championships gold medallist Sir Mo Farah, and Paralympic superstar David Weir head the elite entries for The Big Half by London Marathon Events on Sunday morning (4 September).
London's community half marathon will provide another exciting mix of world-class racing, fundraising, and community celebrations as more than 16,000 people are participating and the event will be streamed live across the BBC from 08:10 to 10:30 on BBC iPlayer, the Red Button, and BBC Sport website as well as on The Big Half Facebook page
McColgan will meet reigning The Big Half champion Charlotte Purdue in the elite women’s race, while former winners Jake Smith and Chris Thompson will be among those challenging the 2018 and 2019 champion Farah in the elite men’s race.
The wheelchair races start at 08:25 and the elite men and women plus the masses get underway at 08:30. Among the 16,000 participants are more than 3,000 runners from community groups across London and there are several famous faces to spot, including Harry Judd from McFly; actor George Rainsford, and comedians Helen Thorn and Rob Deering.
Also included is the New Balance Big Relay, where teams of four can take on four legs of the 13.1-mile distance, and The Big Mile – a family-friendly event over the final mile of the route.
For the first time this year, participants in the half marathon were given the option to choose whether to collect a New Balance finisher’s T-shirt designed by a community group and/or finisher’s medal, or to have a tree planted instead, as part an initiative with Trees not Tees that has seen more than 3,000 trees planted.
The Big Half starts close to Tower Bridge and passes through four of London's boroughs – Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark, and Tower Hamlets – before a spectacular finish in front of the iconic Cutty Sark.
The Big Mile, starting at 14:30, is a free, one-mile fun run around Greenwich for first-timers, families, and children of all ages – perfect for keeping the atmosphere going after the main event.
