Mo Farah at Great Manchester Run

Mo To Make Manchester Return

Mo Farah back on the start line for Great Manchester Run 2022...

The Great Run Company has announced that Sir Mo Farah will be taking on the Great Manchester Run in 2022 (May 22). Sporting legend Sir Mo last took part in the event in 2018, when he triumphed over Ugandan Moses Kipsiro in a memorable sprint finish with 100 metres to go, winning in a time of 28 minutes 27 seconds.

Looking ahead to May, Sir Mo said: “I’m pleased to say the injury problems I had last year are now behind me, training has been going well and I am happy with the shape I am showing.
“Any time I race in the UK it is exciting for me because I love running in front of my home fans and I want to give my best for them. I had an amazing reception in Manchester when I won the event in 2018 so I’m looking forward to racing on the streets of the city again later this year.”

Here's the great man in action alongside double World Champion and 2019 women's winner Helen Obiri:

Sir Mo will be competing against the runner-up of the 2021 staging, Andy Butchart (GB). Butchart will be looking to go one better at this year’s Manchester 10K, especially after setting a new Scottish record over the distance on the track earlier this month. The Brits will face stiff competition on the fast, flat course, from Australian Stewart McSweyn, three-time Oceanic record holder and four-time Diamond League winner.
Chairman of the Great Run Company, Sir Brendan Foster said: “We’re thrilled that Sir Mo will be returning to the Great Manchester Run this year and we’re looking forward to an exciting elite race in the 10K.
“It was his birthday yesterday, so a big happy birthday to Mo, but having him back on the streets of Manchester will be a gift for everyone who comes out to cheer him on and everyone watching at home.”
The event is open to runners of all ages and abilities, with entertainment zones that celebrate the spirit of the city at every kilometre and some of the best (and loudest!) crowd support anywhere in the world, it’s a party atmosphere from start to finish.
Whether it’s your first 10K or your 50th half marathon you are guaranteed an inclusive celebration of Mancunian running, with music blazing, crowds buzzing, legs pumping and fists bumping. The city comes alive on Great Manchester Run weekend.
