In the fast stream at Mallory Park Spring 5K & 10K
A slick and speedy weekend at the famous race circuit
It was all systems go at Mallory Park last weekend (17-18 April) as runners from across the country raced in the Spring 5K & 10K Festival. Their performances were live streamed to an appreciative virtual audience.
No spectators were allowed at the Leicestershire event due to Covid restrictions but organisers Race Rapid Mallory had the solution in the form of a live stream of both the 5K and 10K. The live footage was accompanied by a commentary in what one viewer said: “Felt like proper racing again” . The system worked well, bringing real world action to online spectators who posted messages of support and encouragement.
There was 8 x 5K races on Saturday followed the next day by 4 x 10K races with slower runners starting early and faster runners at the end of the day. The first race began at 9am over both days. Live stream coverage was from 8.50am to 1pm Saturday and Sunday.
Blue skies, sunshine and a slight breeze were ideal conditions and made for some fast times. Race 8 in the 5K saw a group of five runners pull away from the main pack on the third and final lap increasing the pace as they headed towards the finish. The sprint was on and saw Sam Hart of Newbury AC winning in 14:12. Olivia Mathias of Newark AC was the fastest female in 16:13.
Sunday was the turn of the 10K and speed was again on the menu. In Race 4, Dominic Jones of Rugby & Northampton AC was out in front, running 4:33/4:34 per lap and aiming for a sub-30 finish. With 100 metres to go, he kicked for home and crossed the line in 30:00, beating his PB of 30:16. Elisha Tait of Birmingham University was the first female in 35:14.
Full sets of results for both days can be viewed on the Titanium Race Timing website.
Live streams of the 5K and 10K are available to watch on the Race Rapid Mallory Facebook page.
