Let's Go To Lichfield
A scenic 10K in a cathedral city, sounds like a perfect September day...
With its three-spired cathedral and countless listed buildings, Lichfield in Staffordshire is an interesting place to visit throughout the year, but what about the race scene you may ask? A long-standing 10K in September (10th) is the city's premier event, and it is easy to see why.
Now in its 26th year, the Lichfield 10K has acquired a reputation as a top class event, even drawing comparisons with London Marathon in terms of its organisation, atmosphere and support.
Hosted by Lichfield RC, this race is open to both newcomers and experienced athletes looking to test themselves on an undulating course with help from a team of pacers. The latter always prove to be invaluable for more than a few on the day.
Alongside the 10K is a Family Fun run which involves a gentle 2K lap around the lovely Beacon Park. The fun run starts at 9.30am whilst the main 10K starts an hour later, meaning you can watch family and friends cross the line in the Fun Run before taking on the main event!
2022 was the 25th anniversary race and it was also the inaugural outing for a new course, starting and finishing at Beacon Park and thereby offering great facilities for both runners and spectators. Organisers say: "Our 10K route is through the lovely Lichfield countryside, quiet lanes through the scenic surrounding villages with a hill or two thrown in. This is a favourite route of Lichfield Running Club and we’re really excited we’ve been able to use it for our race and introduce it to others.
"Did you know it’s never rained during the Lichfield 10K? Fingers crossed for another dry event this year!"
Rob Michaelson-yeates of Lonely Goat RC won the 2022 race in 33:18 while first female was Ashlin Mcaree of Birchfield Harriers in 42:06. Commenting on Facebook Maria Browne said: "Absolutely gorgeous route that will be new to lots of people, great they get to see it - and it has something a little bit special compared to the other Staffs 10ks."
