Racing off at the Stafford 10K

Gratton soars to success at Stafford 10K

He was dominant throughout the race.

Lee Gratton continued his winning streak at Sunday’s (25 September) Stafford 10K with an impressive display of running from start to finish. He led the way at this well attended and supported race that returned after a two year break.

Gratton of Rugeley Runners can add the Stafford 10K to his growing tally of wins in a season that has seen him go from strength to strength. Coached by John Danahay, he has notched up victories at road races that include the Dave Clarke 5K, Cheadle 4, Staffs Knot 5 and Stone St Michael’s 10K and cross country - Race 1, Betley Court Farm (North Staffs Cross Country League).

This wasn’t his first appearance at Stafford: he finished third in 33:42 at the 2019 race and aimed to improve upon that in 2022.

Crowds gathered in Market Square as runners of all abilities lined up, waiting to begin at 10.30am. Lee Gratton got off to a good start as he and the rest of the field left the Square along a closed road course that wound its way around the town centre. It passed through urban areas and green spaces such as Victoria Park along with the Isabel Trail - site of the local parkrun.

He was out in front to the finish in Market Square and the winner of the 2022 Stafford 10K in 31:28 knocking more than two minutes off his 2019 time. Samuel Evans of Preston Harriers was second in 32:50 and Pravesh Patel of Wolverhampton & Bilston AC third in 33:21.

A strong performance from Emma Taylor of City of Stoke AC saw her claim the women’s title in 36:41. Lucy Calrow of Wolverhampton & Bilston AC was second female in 38:18 and Rebecca Harrison of City of Stoke AC third female in 38:34.

All the results can be found via the runABC Race Listings page.

It was celebrations for Lee and many others at what was an enjoyable community event in ideal conditions.
