Sunshine on the runners at the Rugby 10

Green and Munn triumph at Rugby 10

Winning performances from the host club pair.

There was a double celebration for Rugby & Northampton AC in their annual 10 mile road race (Sunday 3 October). David Green and Hayley Munn did their club proud in a small yet competitive field.

The Rugby 10 Mile took place on a dry, windy day, starting at 10.30am near Barby Cricket Club and on an undulating course that included ‘Cart Hill’. Part of the Warwickshire Road Race League (WRRL) and Northants Road Running League (NRRL), this year’s race included the Midland Masters AC Champs and the Northants AA 10 Mile Champs. That made for a good hard thrash on public roads with points and prizes at stake.

Entries were limited to 250 due to Covid regulations and the race organised in accordance with these. It was a mass start with runners streaming away and onwards through Kilsby, Hillmorton, Barby, Kilsby then back to Barby, not forgetting ‘The Hill’ after 6 miles and another incline in the last mile. There was a time check at 5 miles enabling them to see if they were on target for a podium finish or a PB.

David Green of Rugby & Northampton AC ran strongly to be first over the line in 56:07. Namir Batavia of Coventry Godiva Harriers was second in 57:22 with Green’s teammate Stephen Marks third in 58:10.

It was equally impressive running by Hayley Munn of Rugby & Northampton AC to win the women’s race in 1:02:38 and 5th overall. Alice Belcher of Wellingborough & District AC finished second in 1:04:00 with a gap of more than ten minutes between her and teammate Helen Etherington who was third in 1:15:39.

The last runner finished in 1:51:12. The full set of results can be found on the RunABC Midlands Race Listings page.

This was a successful day for Rugby & Northampton AC and Wellingborough & District AC with all the clubs and competitors happy to be a part of this race again.
