Christmas running in Cumbria doesn't have to involve mountains, muddy trails or a battle with the elements. The Hoad Hill Christmas 10K returns to Ulverston on Sunday 6 December, offering runners a flat, fast course with an unusual detour through the grounds of a Buddhist retreat.

Organised by Hoad Hill Harriers, the race starts near Ulverston Park Sports Club before weaving through the historic market town towards the coast road. One of the route's most distinctive features is its passage through the grounds of Conishead Priory, home to the Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre, before runners head back towards the clubhouse for the finish.

It's an appealing combination for anyone hoping to squeeze another personal best into their 2026 racing calendar. The organisers describe the course as flat and fast, with chip timing and individual prizes for the leading men and women, alongside veteran and club team awards. The race takes place on open roads, so runners will need to remain aware of other road users.

There's also an opportunity for younger runners to join the occasion. A 1 mile fun run starts at 11am, half an hour before the main 10K, with medals for participants. Children under eight must be accompanied by an adult, while the 10K welcomes runners aged 15 and over.

Entries are currently available through the runABC race hub, with the 10K priced at £13 for affiliated club runners and £15 for others before booking fees. All 10K finishers receive a memento, with refreshments available at race headquarters.

For runners looking for a friendly club event before Christmas, Hoad Hill Harriers has put together an attractive combination of competitive racing, family participation and a route with a little more character than the average town centre 10K.
