Blackford Hill Has A Festive Challenge Waiting
Hermitage Trail Runs return to Edinburgh on 22 November, combining challenging 10K and 5K routes over Blackford Hill with a festive family run supporting local causes...
This relates to: Hermitage Trail Runs & Fun Run
Blackford Hill isn't particularly interested in making life easy for runners, but the views from its slopes offer considerable compensation. Hermitage Trail Runs & Fun Run returns to Edinburgh on Sunday 22 November, bringing three very different challenges to one of the capital's most attractive natural spaces.
Organised by Scurry Events, the eighth edition features 10K and 5K trail races starting and finishing beside Hermitage of Braid House. Both follow single lap routes through the nature reserve and over Blackford Hill, where woodland tracks, grassy paths, muddy sections and uneven ground provide a proper test of winter running ability.
The rewards are worth the effort. The elevated sections offer extensive views across Edinburgh and towards the Firth of Forth, while the sheltered woodland trails provide a contrasting experience lower down. The 10K starts at 9:45am, followed by the 5K five minutes later, with both courses clearly marked and marshalled.
Once the serious climbing is finished, attention turns to the younger generation. The 1.2K Festive Fun Run begins at 11:30am, following the main drive between Hermitage House and the lodge entrance. Every child receives an elf hat to wear and keep, with festive fancy dress encouraged and accompanying adults able to join in free of charge.
There's a worthwhile community connection too. Proceeds from the fun run will support South Morningside Primary School and the Friends of the Hermitage and Blackford Hill, helping local organisations connected to the area.
For Edinburgh runners looking for a November challenge, Blackford Hill provides the climbing, the scenery and just enough festive cheer to soften the experience.
Entries are open, with full details available through the runABC Race Hub.
