Milne & Jacobs-Conradie dominate Hertfordshire Half Marathon
Pre-race favourite Alex Milne (Hercules Wimbledon) disappeared into the mist to claim his third successive Hertfordshire Half Marathon title on Sunday (24 November) while last week's Dirt Half Challenge champion, Charlene Jacobs-Conradie (Luton), was a doubly impressive winner of the women's race.
Hertfordshire Half Marathon, managed by RunThrough events, retained its popularity with 1,539 finishers in 3:17:52. Although the course is 'testing' with an uphill finish, attractions include the spectacular setting of Knebworth House, traffic-free rural route and some of the most enthusiastic marshals found anywhere (see above).
Alex Milne (1:11:26) enjoyed a near three minute margin as two more men finished inside 1:15:00. Cambridge & Coleridge team mates Matthew Slater (1:14:15) and Rob Mahen (1:14:52) were the next to arrive through the gloom on a murky day.
Charlene Jacobs-Conradie (W40, 1:22:37) showed remarkable recuperative powers after her success in Leighton Buzzard the previous weekend. Her victory margin was more than six minutes over Helena Jidborg Alexander (1:29:14) and Fran Owen (Clapham Chasers, 1:30:22).
More than 50 runners beat 90 minutes and two hours was good for a top half finish. The conditions did not help anyone with serious designs on the course records, which were retained by Alex Milne (1:08:44) and Helen Davies (Ipswich Jaffa, 1:19:28).
Those lively marshals were particularly appreciated by 2:25:32 finisher Stacie Whitelaw, who had a moment at a drink station and posted this comment: “Thank you for a great event again and the marshals, especially the lovely young lady on a corner with water who filled up my water bottle for me. I had the shakes and she emptied one into my running bottle for me.”
