Sporting Stars Come Out For Great Weekend

We look ahead to the fantastic weekend of running that is in store for runners in Glasgow...

The stage is set for this weekend's big race action in Glasgow with all places for the Great Scottish Run's kids events and 10K snapped up in advance. There are some spaces still available for the main event - all 13.1 miles of it, so if you are race fit for a half marathon then why not go for it?

Starting and finishing in the heart of Glasgow, those taking part can once again look forward to iconic landmarks and incredible local support throughout both the 10K and half marathon routes. Having taken part in the Half Marathon event myself in 2023 (back for the 10K this year) I can 100% vouch for that - the cheering and words of encouragement were second to none.

There will be some sporting star power at Sunday's races with Scotland Internationals and Glasgow Warriors teammates Duncan Weir and Kyle Steyn ringing the bell to start over 30,000 runners. Not only will the BKT United Rugby Championship champions be counting down the crowd, but they’ll also be ringing the start bell for 16 of their Glasgow Warriors' colleagues who are running as part of their Fighting for our Families campaign with the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, setting their sights to raise £85,000 in the 24/25 seasons.

A spokesperson said: “We’re delighted that we can collaborate with the Great Scottish Run to promote our Fighting for our Families campaign, and raise the profile of our league winners amongst the thousands of locals and visitors that will descend on George Square for the 10K and half marathon this weekend.

"Every one of the Glasgow Warriors who has signed up for the run is giving up their time to train and raise money amongst their friends, families, and contacts helping us to raise the most money we ever have for the charity.”

And the kids will be equally impressed with their races being started by stars of the BBC’s Gladiators, Sabre and Apollo. The return of the hit show to the screens in January has created a whole new generation of Gladiator fans, many of whom will be taking part in the fun-packed ‘Finding Your Superpower’ themed event.

Scottish-born Sabre (Sheli McCoy) and Apollo (Alex Gray) said: “We’re delighted to be involved in Scotland’s biggest kids running event at the AJ Bell Junior and Mini Great Scottish Run this Saturday. Fostering a love for sports and staying active is at the heart of our mission and something we deeply care about. It will be a true joy to see so many young athletes enjoying grassroots sports. We’ll be on hand to high-five the runners and cheer them across the finish line – we can’t wait to see you there!”
