Fynn Batkin & Nicole Roberts beat the Sunset 5K
Fynn Batkin and Nicole Roberts did the double at Desborough Races' new offering. They went flat out at Sunday’s (18 August) Beat The Sunset 5K and hit the top spot.
At 7.30pm on a warm evening in Northamptonshire, over 300 runners felt the need for speed at Beat The Sunset 5K road race. There was a £700 prize fund that included £50 for a new course record and an invitation to beat the Met Office sunset time of 8.12pm.
They sped away from the start at West Lodge Rural Centre and along a fast course on closed roads in the town and countryside. There was a mere 32 feet of elevation but apart from that the route was flat. This made it ideal for any runner chasing a PB.
Triathlete Fynn Batkin got off to a flying start and forced the pace early on as they continued along the old A6 Harborough Road. Then onto Brampton Wood Lane, Stoke Road and Back Lane before turning into West Lodge Drive at 4.3km and a sprint towards the finish.
Batkin of Kettering Town Harriers won the 5k race in 14:54 and posted a new course record. Michael Aldridge of Wootton RR was second in 15:22 closely followed by Batkin’s teammate Jack Hope who came third in 15:25.
Head coach at Citius Fitness and elite athlete Nicole Roberts of Birchfield Harriers was the fastest female in 18:28 despite not having run for over a month. She also posted a new course record. Kirstie Sharman of Bedford Harriers was second in 18:47 with Lucy Watts of Wellingborough & District AC third in 19:05.
There were 314 finishers, 41 of whom ran sub-20 minute.
