Derwent River Relays

No Hills, Just Thrills!

Four-person relay event returns to the Derbyshire calendar this summer...

The Derwent River Relays & Fun Run is back on Saturday, 12 July bringing its signature mix of team spirit, scenic racing and fun-filled competition to Belper Meadows Sports Club.

Dubbed the 'Original and Best' 4 x 4.5K relay, this event has been a staple of the Derbyshire running scene for years and 2025 promises to be bigger and better than ever. The beloved original route is back - meaning no more hills, so runners can enjoy a fast, multi-terrain course through the beautiful mill town of Belper.

Runners will compete in teams of four, tackling the 4.5K course across various categories: Open, Senior, V40, and V50, with male, female, and mixed teams all welcome. Mixed teams can have up to two male runners and veteran categories require all runners to meet the age qualification.

The event isn’t just about speed - fancy dress and comedy batons are highly encouraged, adding a playful twist to the competition. Organisers comment: "While a baton isn’t required, teams looking to stand out are invited to get creative!"

For younger participants, a free Kids Fun Run will take place before the main event, with medals for all. Category winners in the relay will also take home locally made medals, adding a unique touch to the awards.

With hot and cold refreshments on-site and an atmosphere buzzing with camaraderie, this event is set to be one of the most enjoyable in the local racing calendar. As one spokesperson put it: “Always a beloved staple in the Belper calendar, Derwent River Relays never fails to be a fantastic day!”
