Victoria Ratcliffe wins Chew Valley 10K

Successful returns for Eagon and Ratcliffe

Whether you're 15 or 83, Chew Valley's the place to be!

Runners aged 15 to 83 competed in the Chew Valley 10K on Sunday (12 September) with 244 completing the tough, hilly course in the beautiful Mendip Hills in Somerset. The youngest – Anna Streatfield-James – ran her debut 10K with her dad Doug in 58:44 and the oldest – the evergreen Des Gillingham – completed his race in 1:15:57, with 24 runners behind him!

This was the eighth Chew Valley 10K and the event was blessed with a sunny September morning at the Race HQ at Bishop Sutton Football Club. As the runners charged out of the village and up the hill it soon became apparent that the 2019 champions David Eagon and Victoria Ratcliffe (pictured above) were intent on defending their titles, with the 2020 race having been cancelled.

Eagon (Bristol & West, 34:59) sprinted clear of Graham Wadsworth (35:29) and Joe Pritchard (37:46) – both running unattached. Nathan Young's 2014 course record 33:05 lived on.

Sixth overall was Ratcliffe (W45 Somer AC, 40:16) to win the women's race from W45 Buzz Hamilton James (44:45) and W35 Laura McMillan (Cheddar RC, 45:00) in an all masters podium. The women's course record is Lucy MacAlister's 37:28, also from 2014.

Debbie Fortune Estates was the main sponsor again and entries were clearly affected by the pandemic as there were a record 863 finishers in 2018. The children's 1K companion race was not held this year.

Local runners in action included the wonderfully named Chew Valley Snails – a local women's group – and their male equivalents the Chew Valley Slugs. Bishop Sutton nurse Jane Wookey ran with friends and family in memory of her husband Mark Wookey, raising awareness and funds for Lymphoma Research Trust.

To help support the event's local causes, including Bishop Sutton Primary School Society, a virtual Chew Valley 10K has been launched and entrants can complete the distance in any way, anywhere before 31 October to receive a bespoke medal and optional technical Chew Valley 10K T-shirt.
