Bewl 15 action 2022

Heath flourishes on the Bewl trail

Jackets for some and cake for all at annual Bewl Water 15-miler

Bewl Water was at its beautiful best for the 22nd Bewl 15 trail race on a sunny Sunday morning (3 July) as 438 runners completed the undulating circuit of the reservoir in times ranging from 1:25:58 to 4:11:00.

The owner of the impressive new course record time is Simon Heath (Brighton Phoenix) who was joined in the elite sub-90-minute club by prolific racer James Baker (M45 Chichester Runners, 1:29:07).

Baker – the defending Bewl 15 champion – was unable to add to his 1,010 individual race and parkrun career first places due to the quality of this year's Bewl 15 entry that saw Dillon Hobbs (Tunbridge Wells Harriers, 1:34:50) finish third overall and first under-20 junior.

The women's race saw five athletes inside two hours and the top four were all masters category competitors. W40 Freya Leman (Brighton & Hove AC, 1:49:56) led the way from W45 Soulla Wright (Arena 80, 1:55:55), W35 Lianne Leakey (Hailsham Harriers, 1:58:01), W55 Tina Oldershaw (Tonbridge AC, 1:58:45) and the first senior Yolanda King (Hastings Runners, 1:58:43).

Bewl 15 is promoted by the local club Wadhurst Runners and the race HQ is Uplands Community College, Wadhurst, East Sussex. The 'Waddies' are renowned for their tough annual trail race with rewards that include a T-shirt, medal, and goody bag plus free hot drinks and a mountain of cakes at the finish.

In addition to various prizes and a £50 bonus for the course record Paramo Directional Clothing of Wadhurst sponsored vouchers for running jackets for the first junior, senior and veteran male and female.

Our image shows #572 Nigel May (Petts Wood Runners, 2:09:06), #547 Andrew Barber (Orpingtoin Road Runners, 2:09:35) and #283 Sean Climo (Tonbridge AC, 2:09:44) well on their way to finishing in that order just outside the top 100 places.
