2024 World Indoor Athletics Champs Coming to Glasgow

Global competition will inspire, entertain and (hopefully) give us cause to celebrate success

After a bidding process lasting six months, Glasgow has been chosen over other hopeful cities to host the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships.

The competition will be held at the Emirates Area, five years after the same venue hosted the European Athletics Indoor Championships.

Athletics fans will be hoping that Scotland’s athletes will be on the same good form in 2024 as they were in 2019, when Chris O’Hare, Eilidh Doyle, Zoey Clark and Laura Muir all took podium spots – Muir with a 1500m/3000m gold double.

It’s still far too early to speculate about which of Scotland’s current crop of top athletes and Olympians might be chosen to represent Team GB&NI in five years’ time, but the likes of Eilish McColgan and Laura Muir have all been busy sharing the good news on Twitter.

The exact dates are yet to be finalised, but organisers World Athletics expects them to run during March 2024.

But while the senior athletes might hope to benefit from a home court advantage, Scotland’s most promising young athletes will be heading to Lima, Peru for the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships.

The Glasgow event will be the last chance to see the world’s best in action at a global competition before the Paris Olympics starting in July 2024 – 100 years since they were last held in the City of Light.

On hearing the news, Chair of scottishathletics David Ovens said: "In an era where Scottish athletes are shining on the world stage, I am delighted that Glasgow has been chosen to host this major, global event.

"Glasgow has a fine tradition of hosting fantastic events and I am certain that the World Indoor Championships in 2024 will be no exception."
