Bewley and Thomas sparkle at Audley Festive 5K
Their victories gave them a warm glow on an icy cold day in the Midlands.

They were amongst a cheerful turnout at Audley Cricket Club; and whilst temperatures were not quite as severe as we’ve seen over the last week, it was still eye-wateringly cold.
This annual event from Audley Striders RC and Audley Rotary Club had sold out beforehand – a testament to its popularity with runners of all ages and abilities. Being near Christmas there were plenty of festive outfits plus an appearance by a T-Rex making for an eye-catching spectacle as they raced around the village. There was plenty of support from local residents who applauded their efforts, in spite of the conditions.
Newcastle (Staffs) AC’s Ben Bewley finished second in last year’s race and was determined to go one better this time. His determination paid off as he crossed the line the 2022 winner in 18:56. Mick Hutchins of Sandbach Striders came second in 19:15, closely followed by Kieran Gilbert of Silverdale RC in 19:19.
Alice Thomas became the women’s winner for the second consecutive year in 22:28. Harriet Drennan of Alsager Runners was second in 22:57 with Aisling Redmond third in 23:02.
The last runner crossed the line in 1:11:13. There were 156 finishers.

It was successful event from Audley Striders RC and Audley Rotary Club in support of the Midlands Air Ambulance in the company of other seasonal-minded souls. Everyone enjoyed the fast course around Audley village, the medal and woolly hat at the end and best of all, a relaxing drink in the Cricket Club bar.
