Windermere Marathon

26 Scenic Miles In '26!

For those seeking a race that combines scenery and a genuine sense of achievement, the Windermere Marathon offers an unforgettable way to earn 26.2 miles in 2026...

The Windermere Marathon returns on Sunday 14 June 2026, offering runners one of the most scenic and memorable marathon experiences in the UK. Set in the heart of the Lake District, this beautiful event takes place around England’s largest lake and delivers a true sense of place from start to finish.

The point to point 26.2 mile route showcases the very best of Cumbria, winding along lakeside paths, quiet country roads and through picturesque villages, all framed by expansive fell views that shift with every mile. From the opening stretch, runners are immersed in a landscape that feels both wild and welcoming, creating an atmosphere that is hard to match anywhere else on the marathon calendar.

Rather than relentless climbs, the Windermere Marathon features rolling terrain that provides a satisfying challenge without feeling overwhelming. This balance makes it an achievable first marathon for newcomers to the distance while still offering experienced runners a standout goal race that delivers far more than a fast time.

What truly sets the Windermere Marathon apart is its atmosphere. Local communities turn out to support the runners, volunteers provide constant encouragement and the finish line celebrations reflect the spirit of the Lake District, proud, friendly and quietly epic. Careful attention is paid to the runner experience, from smooth logistics to a beautifully designed finisher’s medal that captures the character of the landscape just covered.

More than half of the route is run on partially traffic free roads or roads with a dedicated running lane, allowing runners to focus on the challenge and the views. With an elevation gain of approximately 600 metres, this is a demanding but deeply rewarding road marathon that prioritises experience over personal bests.

Now organised by The Great Run Company, who are delighted to have inherited the event from Brathay Trust, the Windermere Marathon continues to build on its strong reputation as a true runner’s marathon.
