Run Wigan Festival Race Action

Wigan's Wait Is Over

It's a March date for the return of the Run Wigan Festival…

It may have taken three years and two missed events, but Lancashire's Run Wigan Festival will finally return on March 20. Organisers say: "After the heartbreak of having to cancel the 2020 event with less than two weeks to go due to the COVID pandemic, and then being unable to stage our event last year, we are over the moon to be back in 2022."

All races start and finish on the town's Market Street and will take in some of the most popular landmarks Wigan has to offer. The festival remains a four-race affair with a flagship half marathon distance as well as 10-miler, 5K and Family Mile.

Organised by charity Joining Jack, proceeds from the event go towards funding research in treatments, and the hope of a potential cure for ALL boys living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

If you are new to running and need help getting to the 5K distance then check out the Couch To 5K sessions that are being provided by event partners BeWell Wigan. The block started on January 5, but there's still time to join in and reach the goal well ahead of race day. The group are full of support and lots of encouragement with a team of experienced and friendly run leaders. You can find out more here.

Back in 2019 runners enjoyed live entertainment on stage from some fantastic local bands, and continental food markets were in town too - runABC North can't confirm if the same is true for this year, but regardless it's going to be a special return for this much-loved event. Final word with the race organisers: "Thanks again for your support in what have been difficult times for everyone, we can't wait to see everyone back on the start line in March."

You can find out more at the event website.
