Running To The The Power Of 10K

With the Vitality London 10,000 bound to capture the headlines this Spring Bank Holiday Monday (28 May) we take the 10K distance and run with it to see what else is available in the runABC South area this weekend.

RunThrough Olympic Park is not an instruction but an invitation from experienced race organisers RunThrough to join them for a variety of distances, including 10K, on the spectacular one-mile, Moto GP styled cycle racing circuit within the Olympic Park. Saturday (26 May) is the day for this fun, frantic event that starts at 9:00am with a half marathon.

Sunday is the busy day for 10K enthusiasts with a fine selection of the popular distance on offer. The Roc Newbury 10K starts and finishes in the centre of the historic Berkshire market town and features 7k on roads and 3k on footpaths and canal towpath. This is an area well known to former resident and runABC reporter Alan Newman, who can vouch for the local club Newbury AC, who have 10 years experience of promoting and refining this race.

Another event that has been personally tested by our correspondent is the Folkestone Coastal 10K between Folkestone seafront and Hythe in Kent. Organised by the Folkestone Rotary Club, last year's race raised over £35,000 for local charities. The course is as flat and fast as you will find anywhere and takes in the beautiful coastal scenery that gives rise to the race title.

Another Rotary event on the same day is the Burnham-on-Crouch 10K based at the Dengie Hundred Sports Centre in Riverside Park. This is another race with an off-road section, including a run alongside the sea wall beside the River Crouch. It looks like our pictured runners enjoyed themselves in the Essex town that is perhaps most famous for its yachting regatta, hosted annually since 1893.

Finally, a shout for the Hatfield Broad Oak 10K on Bank Holiday Monday. Despite the counter attraction in the capital, this traditional event has clocked up 33 years and risen to a regular 1,500 entries. The medieval village near Bishop's Stortford is part of the attraction itself, along with the figure-8 course that loops through the heart of the village. However, the famous HBO 10K tech T-shirt, the colour of which is a closely guarded secret until race day, also is a collector's item.

Full details of these and many other events are available in runABC South race listings brought to you in association with Sports Tours International
