5K Or 45 Miles: You Choose
The weather looks pretty good for January (so that's one excuse ruled out) and with races at every distance from 5k to 45 miles in the south this weekend, we think it is time to get out there and do your thing!
With the Christmas decorations back in storage and the tree and cards recycled, it is now time to address the elephant in the room – that's us and our need for speed, or at least the company of like-minded folk, as we test our resolve at our preferred distance and terrain. This is not the time for heroics, with sudden changes that may lead to an injury, so the wide variety of events available mid-January should enable us all to find a suitable challenge.
Starting at the top end of the range, there is the Country to Capital 45 from Wendover (Bucks) to Little Venice, London and the North Downs Way 30 at Chantry Wood, Guildford tomorrow (Saturday 13 January). The Country to Capital is fully subscribed for the 10th running of this Scott Ultra Series event promoted by Go Beyond Ultra. There may still be room for ultra enthusiasts in the North Downs Way 30, which is a guided run rather than a race. Check the website for details.
Perhaps 10-13 miles is more your thing in which case we have the Axmouth Challenge 10 miles on Sunday (14 January) from Axmouth village hall in Devon. Promoted by Axe Valley Runners, who are also behind the fiendishly tough Grizzly, this is the first event in the East Devon Community Race Series. More conventional races at 5k, 10k and half marathon are on offer in London's Victoria Park, courtesy of Run Through.
Several 10k races are available at London's Richmond Park and Bushy Park; at Woodcote near Reading and Bromley in Kent for example. The 10k is an ideal stepping stone between parkrun and half marathon, so if you have not tried a 10k yet, consider getting one on your running CV soon.
Alternatively, you could keep your powder dry for future battles and watch the elite on the telly in the Great Edinburgh International Cross Country, live on BBC One from 13:15 to 15:15 on Saturday afternoon. This annual curtain-raiser to the athletics year features the very best of British talent competing against teams representing Europe and the United States.
