Barbara Thackery

Ladies Day At Trafford 10K

There were some impressive runs by a female contingent at last weekend's Trafford 10K...

Last weekend's Trafford 10K was once again blessed with perfect racing conditions which may explain why so many participants were able to smash their PBs! A quality field of elite and club runners showed the depth of athletes travelling from across the UK and further afield to participate in this one lap, scenic race... and a course record was broken too!

Yes, it was in the women's race that Samantha Harrison had a fantastic run and broke the (women's) course record in 30:55 making her the third fastest British woman on UK soil! An amazing achievement. Indeed, fast times were recognised across the board, as race organisers, Run North West, commented: "These results filtered right the way through the field, we saw 30 men going sub 30 minutes, 36 women going sub 35 minutes and 126 athletes in total went sub 32 minutes!"

The winner of the race was Richard Allen of Leeds City AC who stormed round the course in 29:03.

It is, of course, not all about speed. Simply taking part is an achievement, and no more so than for a remarkable woman - Barbara Thackery. Barbara celebrated her 85th birthday by participating in the race, doing so to raise money for St Ann's Hospice.

Speaking about her achievement a spokesperson from the charity said: "Congratulations to our incredible supporter Barbara Thackray who completed Trafford 10K on her 85th birthday on Sunday. Barbara ran the event alongside 11 family members and achieved a personal best of 85 minutes!

"Barbara has raised over £2,100 on her JustGiving page alone. The funds raised will go towards our Build It Together appeal for a new purpose-built hospice in Heald Green. We are beyond grateful for Barbara's continued support and dedication, she really is an inspiration to us all."

Speaking after the final runner crossed the finish line, event organisers said: "A massive thank you to all our amazing volunteers this morning, without you today wouldn't have been possible and we are forever grateful for your support. Finally, thank you to everyone who brought a donation for our chosen race charity Trafford Foodbank, helping those less fortunate in the local area, it's greatly appreciated."
