Victory pose for Gemma Steel at the Garendon Gallop 10K

Gemma gallops to victory again at Garendon

The second time she was the outright winner of the 10K.

Gemma Steel took first place and first lady at Sunday’s (21 August) Garendon Gallop 10K. She was two minutes faster than her 2019 finish time as an added bonus.

The Charnwood AC member was part of a 200-strong field at The Garendon Gallop 10K from Start to Finish Race Events. This was a delightful race in a historical setting that was open to all abilities as per the organisers’ ethos and the great weather added an extra shine to the event.

Whilst it says ‘gallop’ in the title, participants can jog or walk instead giving them time to view and enjoy three 18th century buildings with a Roman influence. The Obelisk, Triumphal Arch and Temple of Venus stood tall and proud on an off-road, undulating course comprised of track, private playing fields and private road in the grounds of Garendon Park.

This one lap race started at 10.30am and was chip timed, fully marshalled and best of all, traffic-free.

The Gardendon Gallop 10K made its debut in 2019 and Gemma Steel was the overall winner in 36:43. She was in fine form last weekend, her arms raised high in triumph as she crossed the line to win the 2022 race in 34:43.

Tim Hartley of Notts AC finished second in 35:01. Lee O’Connor was faster than his 2021 time of 39:04, finishing third in 37:02.

Grace Tongue was second lady in 45:08 and Sara Insley of South Derbyshire Road Runners, third lady in 45:36.

The full set of results can be found via the runABC Midlands race listing page.

All of this followed by ice cream and refreshments whilst enjoying the sun and the surroundings. A grand day out for all.
