Steel signs up for Stone Virtual 5

Team GBs Gemma Steel invites others to join her in the Stone Virtual 5

The Stone 5 always attracts a quality field and this year’s virtual version is no different. International and Team GB athlete Gemma Steel has entered the annual event that takes place between 19 and 23 August and will be proudly wearing her bespoke race number (128).

The brainchild of well-known sports photographer Mick Hall, the Stone 5 has built a reputation as a challenging race, open to all abilities, held in picturesque Staffordshire countryside. It was created by Mick to raise funds for the Lymphoma Association (now known as Lymphoma Action) to say ‘thank you’ for their help and support during his treatment for Lymphoma cancer. He was given the all-clear and has remained so to this day.

This race like so many others had been affected by the coronavirus pandemic but all was not lost as all profits from this virtual event will be donated to Lymphoma Action and everyone will receive an attractive medal in return. Runners sign up, complete 5 miles within the time scale and on a course to suit them and submit evidence of their finishing time. Flat or undulating routes are acceptable but long downhill stretches are not allowed. Social distancing guidelines must be adhered to.

Gemma is the women’s course record holder at the Meerbrook 15K and is returning to Staffordshire in a virtual sense for the Stone 5. Whilst this is a virtual rather than live race the thought of running a fast 5 mile for charity has appealed to her and she encourages others to do the same.
