Runners At The Winter Pateley Pie And Pint

Tasty running at Pateley Pie ‘n’ Pint

Strong winds and drizzle were suitable for making mud pies as runners got their teeth into picturesque trails in the Yorkshire Dales. They totted up the miles at Saturday’s (1 February) winter Pateley Pie ‘n’ Pint and left feeling fully satisfied.

The charming market town of Pateley Bridge in the heart of Nidderdale, North Yorkshire was the location for this multi-choice feast organised by Its Grim Up North Running. Surrounded by moorlands and hills the town is famous for being home to the oldest sweet shop in England that serves all the old favourites.

There was a selection of distances to choose from: 5 miles, 10 miles, 15 miles, 20 miles, marathon – an extra 1.2 miles was added to this distance - and an ultra all of which were held on a multi-terrain course consisting of grass, trail and a small section of road. The routes featured a few stiles for runners to negotiate that might have posed a challenge for the chap dressed as a rhino!

The technical albeit doable route consisted of a flat section for the first mile and a half before the mile-long climb up the ‘generous hill’. This was followed by a sharp descent then alongside the River Nidd to the finish. There was good camaraderie and courtesy between runners as they helped each other and supported the organisers’ inclusive ethos.

A distinctive medal, chocolate, cake and beer were their rewards and best of all, accompanied by a mouth-watering pie courtesy of a local butcher: pork, pork and chilli or pork and apple with vegetarian and vegan options.

The summer Pateley Pie ‘n’ Pint is on Saturday 27 June.
