Sweet Debut By Bakewell
The parkrun family welcomed a new addition with Bakewell launching their inaugural event on Saturday 6 January. And there was more than one reason to celebrate.
Not only was this the first parkrun for Bakewell it was also the first Peak District National Park run, held along the Monsal Trail which is popular with walkers, cyclists, horse riders and now, runners. The 253 participants were full of praise for the location, route and cafe, with the biggest cheers reserved for the Run Director and their team of volunteers for a very well-organised parkrun.
The Run Director returned the compliment by thanking the participants for their helpfulness and support that ensured the debut was a sparkling one and something to build upon over time. This was particularly appreciated as he and his team of volunteers were new to their roles at parkrun and keen to deliver an enjoyable experience that had been a year in the making.
One aspect that received a special mention was the self-sorting arrangement at the start that prevented any congestion and contributed to the smooth running of the event.
It was second time lucky for this parkrun which had been due to launch on Saturday 30 December but was postponed because of ice and sub-zero temperatures. There were no such worries this time as the weather was cold and wet but runnable and everyone was rarin' to go!
Gregan Clarkson was first across the line in 16:47. Caroline Brock was the first female in 19:45. Philippa Hunstone was the midpoint runner in 28:38 and the field closed on 45:37.
The next parkrun is on Saturday 13 January at 9am from Hassop Station, Bakewell in Derbyshire.
