Summer Trails to ease runners back into racing
Woodland trails time-trial format is a Covid-secure winner
Brian Lewis of the aptly named Winding Paths has been in touch with runABC online to let us know the brand new Summer Trails 10K and 5K events are primed and ready to go on Sunday (9 August).
The picturesque Grammarcombe Woods, Ashcombe Estate in South Devon are just a few minutes off the A380 between Exeter and Newton Abbot and these expansive woodlands provide the perfect backdrop for the socially-distanced, time trial format.
The event is held entirely on private, secluded trails and there will be three running sessions that are spaced out throughout the day. In each session, small waves of runners will start every two minutes, with a maximum of 50 runners on-site or on the course at any time.
The 5K is due off first from 9:00 am, followed by two starts for the 10K runners at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm. All runners will only assemble when called; they will stand two metres apart and start in waves of no more than six runners, every two minutes.
Summer Trails 10K and 5K is licensed and insured by the Association of Running Clubs; will be manually timed and there will be a bespoke wooden medal for all finishers! To comply with current regulations, results will be published after the event and awards sent in the post.
Entrants are asked to declare their expected finish time for the event to make sure each wave has similar paced runners. This should avoid later waves having to overtake earlier waves. The other main rules, to ensure COVID-secure status, are no entries on the day and no name transfers or number swops in order to facilitate Test and Trace measures.
The race HQ has adjacent car parking; toilets on-site; a single water stop at the midway point in the 10K and full Race Medic support. Runners are advised to bring their own refreshments.
Race Director Brian Lewis is excited by the prospect of helping trail runners to ease back into competition in such a beautiful setting, as he told runABC South: “We hope runners will understand the need for these extra measures for everyone’s safety. We want you to enjoy this event in stunning woodland. We look forward to welcoming you to the event and congratulating you at the finish line”.
