Students run to every Greggs in Newcastle in a day
Three university students took Greggs's slogan 'Got to get to Greggs' to a new extreme by running to each of the bakery chain's Newcastle stores in one day. The guys, Matthew Bradbury, Matthew Hutton and Matthew Clark, clocked up around 27 miles as they made their way around 29 separate stores in the North East.
Their challenge, which they dubbed “Matts vs Greggs”, was organised to raise money for the Greggs Foundation Hardship Fund. The organisation provides grants to people in extreme financial need. Being avid fans of the bakery’s stotties and sausage rolls, the Matts decided to combine running a few miles with a fleeting visit.
In the lead up to their challenge, they said: “We had a daft idea to visit every Greggs in Newcastle in a day - we Geordies are blessed with 29 of them by our count - and when we realised it would be marathon distance we decided to try and raise some money for charity.
“We're raising money for the Greggs Foundation's Hardship Fund, which provides grants to people in extreme financial need in the North East. They help people who are in really difficult situations to buy things like cookers, fridge freezers and clothing that can make a real difference to their lives.”
As it stands, the Matts have just surpassed their £1000 fundraising target, with a flurry of donations coming in after they completed the challenge. You can still donate here.
