Chariots of Fire run

Fun loving 'Stubbies' prepare to host Stubbington Green 10K

Stubbington Green 10K joins the veteran ranks on Sunday (12 January). OK, some purists still consider 40 years to be the minimum to qualify for higher age group status but the gateway to masters athletics is now officially 35 years – so happy 35th birthday, Stubbington Green 10K!

George King (Winchester & District AC, 31:37) ruled last year on the scenic course through country lanes and coastal roads. Jen Elkins (Southampton AC, 35:23) returned to defend her title and could be going for her hat trick on Sunday.

The predominantly flat course with 8kms of smooth-surfaced, closed roads always produces fast times. There were over 200 runners inside 40 minutes in 2019 and 1,744 finishers in 1:43:33 on chip timing, making this one of the best supported 10K races in the south of England.

The promoting club Stubbington Green Runners are based between the great maritime cities of Portsmouth and Southampton. The club was founded in 1985 and boasts more than 450 members who have a passion for supporting runners of all abilities.

The club doesn't just organise great races and quality training sessions. They also have a lot of fun, as you can see in the image above and this short but beautifully filmed clip from their annual 'Chariots of Fire' run on Meon Shore Beach at Titchfield by father and son club members Mike and Rich Bell. Just turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy!

The Stubbies also run Beginners to 5K courses, support their local parkrun and have raised many thousands for local good causes. Last year's Stubbington Green 10K helped to fund £4,000 donations each to Abby's Heroes and Solent Diabetes Association.

The annual 10K race sells out every year but 100 entries are taken on the day for the supporting fun run, with a medal and some goodies for every participant. If you are keen to get next year's race in the diary, Race Director Kevin Ashman says: "Pencil in Sunday, 10th January 2021". Full details will be confirmed soon.
