Fancy An Ultra Test?

Fields, forests and lots of fun on offer at this autumnal step into ultra running...

The Fields & Forest Ultra returns on 20 September, offering runners an early autumn test of endurance across the stunning landscapes of West Suffolk and Norfolk. Starting and finishing at The Grumpy Goat Café Bar in Bury St Edmunds, the event covers 34 miles of tracks, trails and lanes, making it an ideal first ultra for those stepping up to the world of long-distance trail running.

The route weaves through three long-distance footpaths and begins with some minor road sections before opening out into the rolling West Suffolk countryside. Runners will then pass into the picturesque Norfolk woodlands, including West Harling Woods near Thorpe Forest Holiday Park, before making the return journey to Suffolk’s famous big skies and wide-open spaces.

Many runners praised the 2024 edition's organisation and friendly atmosphere. Participant Neil May said: “Well done to all involved. Great fun event. Beautiful route. Probably the most thoroughly marked course I’ve ever experienced – no nav required at all. Top checkpoints and super marshalls. I’ve already started recommending to club mates for 2025.”

Organisers describe it as a perfect first ultra challenge but stress that entrants should arrive with the fitness and preparation necessary to complete the demanding distance. Every finisher will receive a medal to mark their achievement and The Grumpy Goat Café Bar will be serving coffee and soft drinks to runners and supporters.

With its mix of scenic countryside, woodland trails and glowing feedback from past participants, the Field & Forest Ultra promises a memorable day for both experienced ultra runners and those taking on the distance for the first time.
