Southport welcomes new parkrun at Kew Woods

The North West added a new parkrun to its roll call with Kew Woods hosting its first event on Saturday (15 December). With 100 runners taking part, plus a further 20 helping out as volunteers, the event at Birkdale, Southport, got off to a strong start.

Saturday’s field, facing some tough winds and cold conditions, started the 5k adjacent to Dobbies Garden Centre. The course consisted of two laps of the woods, with the route incorporating a mixture of trail and tarmac paths.

Thomas Harkin set the course record at Kew Woods, crossing the line first in 19:20, followed by Dave Ayre (20:03). Karen Nicholson was the leading female in 22:16 (6th overall), while Katie Samuelson (22:59) was next in line. Maria Brockway was the midpoint runner in 27:12.

On Twitter, the Running Detective (pictured) shared his thoughts after volunteering at the first run: “Proud to be part of the start of another @parkrunUK event this morning. Kew Woods is next door to @Southportpkrun. I'm sure it will be a fabulous addition to the @parkrun family, contributing to healthier and happier lives in the local community #loveparkrun.”

The addition of Kew Woods means there are now 63 parkruns in the North West. To find an event near you, visit the parkrun website here.
