'Making every day count' in Southend

Havens Hospices Southend Half Marathon is all set for a bumper return

Two years' absence has merely raised hopes and expectations for a bumper return of the Havens Hospices Southend Half Marathon at 9:00am on Sunday (12 June). Perhaps the pent-up enthusiasm, not to mention those super-shoes, will see a revision of the course records that were set in 2011 by Paul Martelletti (Victoria Park Harriers, 1:07:56) and Samantha Amend (Belgrave Harriers, 1:20:10).

Havens Hospices provide palliative nursing and supportive care to adults, young people, and children living with complex or incurable conditions across Essex. As the event website proclaims: "Every mile is helping us to continue ‘Making every day count’ for children and adults with incurable conditions in Essex". In the 25 years of this race over £1.2million has been raised for Havens Hospices.

The start and finish are at East Beach, Shoeburyness – which became Shoe-Busy-Ness in 2019 when four men finished within three seconds behind the champion James Caldon (Benfleet RC, 1:15:30)!

W45 Sara Black (London Heathside, 1:26:59) took the women's victory as 1,940 finished in 3:24:07 and you can relive the action in our race report here.

The coastal course is fast, flat, and traffic-free, making it ideal for first-time half marathon runners as well as more seasoned athletes looking to achieve a PB. In the last edition, 75 runners were back at East Beach to meet the cheering crowd within 90 minutes.

Unusually, there will be some on-the-day numbers available between 7:30am and 8:15am, so a last-minute decision could be made to take part. The two-lap course takes runners along the scenic coast, with views over the Thames Estuary. Pacers will be supporting runners to finish times of 1:45; 2:00; 2:15, and 2:30.
