Under Starters Orders At The Great Sprout Scuttle

Second serving of Sprout Scuttle

Over 600 runners put this humble and much maligned little green vegetable in the spotlight at Sunday’s (8 December) Great Sprout Scuttle. There was much to ‘sprout about’ at the second outing of this sold out event, full of the joys of Christmas.

The National Horseracing College in Doncaster holds races for the four-legged competitor but last Sunday it hosted an event for those with two legs – although dogs were welcome too at this festive fare from Curly’s Athletes. There was the opportunity to fundraise for the RSPCA or adopt an animal as a few attended this event.

With a choice of 5K and 10K it catered for runners of all ages and experience and both races took place on an off-road course that included fields, wooded paths, trails and a canter or gallop around the race course.

A colourful line-up, many wearing Christmas-themed fancy dress that included quite a few sprout outfits got under starters orders at 10am and 10.10am respectively. They stayed the course despite the wet and muddy sections, passing a fully decorated Christmas tree at one point, before a final effort down the home straight and across the finish line.

Mike Sharp of Fitmums & Friends was the winner of the 10K in 42:00. Katie Scutt of Lincsquad was the women’s winner in 49:54.

Cortez Reilly won the 5K in 20:02. Cara Hanson of Steel City Striders RC was the winning female in 25:57.

There was a lean, green, sprout-themed medal for every finisher and a range of festive treats that together with the snow machine and music left everyone ready for the Big Day.

Merry Sproutmas!
