Scottish Half Marathon

Flat, Fast And Festival-Friendly

There are plenty of reasons to sign up to this year's Scottish Half Marathon or 10K, as we find out here...

Thousands of runners are set to descend on East Lothian this summer as the Scottish Half Marathon and 10K returns on 17 August. With both events starting just outside Edinburgh, participants will enjoy stunning coastal views and a lively atmosphere as part of one of Scotland’s best-loved running weekends.

Whether you’re chasing a personal best, fundraising for a good cause or simply taking on a new challenge, this event has something for everyone. Known for its supportive crowds, top-tier organisation and fast courses, it’s a standout date on the calendar for club runners and first-timers alike.

The Scottish Half Marathon follows a point-to-point course along the East Lothian Golf Coast, offering runners a rare chance to cover 13.1 miles on what organisers proudly describe as a 'seriously flat and rapid route'. Beginning just outside the capital, the route winds past dramatic coastline before finishing in style at Musselburgh Racecourse.

For those not quite ready to tackle the half marathon distance, the Scottish 10K offers a brilliant alternative. This shorter race features the same PB-friendly terrain and welcoming vibe, making it a perfect stepping stone for newer runners or those looking to fine-tune their speed.

Adding to the buzz, the race takes place during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, meaning runners and spectators can soak up the festival energy before and after race day. Organisers are encouraging runners of all abilities to sign up, saying: “Come and join us over Edinburgh Fringe Festival season and experience our fast, flat routes. Both events are ideal for PB-chasers, first-timers, and everyone in between!”

Participants consistently praise the event’s smooth logistics and the support of on-course volunteers. One such runner, Sharon Carr, who completed the half marathon in 2023, said: “It was extremely well organised with helpful and supportive volunteers. One of the best organised halfs I have ever attended, thank you.”
