Sam Stevens On His Way To Winning The Trent 5

Sam’s the man again at the Trent 5

Student Sam Stevens was the winner for the second year in a row at Wednesday’s (22 May) sold out Trent 5. His speedy running enabled him to dodge the canal side midges at mile two.

The warm weather meant the flies and midges were out in force along Beeston Canal and the River Trent as over 250 runners passed by at this midweek 5-miler. Organised by Beeston AC it started at 7.15pm from Weirfields Recreation Ground – that also acted as the finish.

They followed an anticlockwise route on a flat, traffic-free route along footpaths and cycle lanes with a drinks station at half way - ideal for clearing the throat of insects at the two mile marker. The runners continued on their way and on to the finish at the Pavilion.

Sam Stevens of University of Nottingham AC won the 2019 Trent 5 in 25:30, knocking almost half a minute off last year’s time. Aston Perrin of Long Eaton RC was runner up for the second time, finishing in 26:25. Only one second separated him from Stevens’ teammate Dylan Stanway who came third.

Jamie Whittaker of Erewash Valley RC was the first female in 32:38 followed by Gabrielle Coveney of Holme Pierrepont RC and Rosa Lavelle-Hill of Formula One Circuit Crew.

This was a well organised, value for money race that was given a ‘thumbs up’ by everyone with requests for a cake stall next year. The latter was especially popular at the 2018 event...
