May's ‘Road to the Isles’ now 26.2 miles longer
Organisers of the Road to the Isles Festival of Running have added a full marathon to their roster of races, to be held this year on Saturday, 11 May.
Mallaig Pool & Leisure have also made further improvements to the 2019 edition of their event, including ‘redrawing all the routes’ to provide more variety, and moving the start and finish lines to the scenic coastal village of Arisaig.
Nearly 600 runners took part in the festival last year, with many commenting on the hills, the breathtaking scenery, the coastal views and, again, the hills.
Organisers say this year’s routes will not disappoint, either: “If runners thought the views were spectacular last year, then they’re in for an even sweeter treat [in 2019]. They’ll be running along some of the most beautiful minor roads in the UK with amazing uninterrupted views to the islands of Muck, Rum and Eigg, and alongside the pristine white beaches of Silver Sands and Camusdarach.
“The Road to the Isles Half Marathon is more than just a road race, it's an experience!”
The undulating 13.1-mile route will begin at Arisaig House, and set off along a fairly level course, through to the pretty fishing village of Arisaig. It then follows the old Road to the Isles towards Traigh. From Traigh it heads on to Morar and the long straight into Mallaig, before ending at the West Bay car park.
The 10k route follows the half marathon route up until about the half-way point at Traigh Beach; the 5k starts near the end of the half marathon route at the church on the banks of Loch Morar; the new marathon follows the route of the half marathon, twice.
Friends and family who want to be part of the Festival but don’t run themselves can sign up for the 'Walk on the Wild Side', a walking event that following the half marathon route.
All profits from the Road to the Isles Festival of Running will go to support Mallaig Pool & Leisure, a social enterprise run by a small team as well as volunteers from the community.
Entries to all events close in just over two weeks time, on 4 May, or when sold out.
