It’s All Go Again For The Glasgow Girls
The Women's 10K returns after 5 years
It's a day of celebration for Glasgow's women runners as GSi Events announce a new Women's 10K race set to grace the streets of the city on 18 June this year. It will be the first closed road women's only 10K run in the city since 2018 when the previous Women's 10K was axed.
GSi Events are no strangers to mass participation events in Scotland and include the ever popular Edinburgh Marathon Festival amongst their stable of events so runners will be looking forward to to a well organised race and a huge celebration of running on the day.
The old Women's 10K was first launched back in 1993 when it was originally organised by Glasgow City Council. It regularly attracted numbers well in excess of 10,000 in the 90s and early noughties but numbers began to decline before it was finally axed after the 2018 running. It has, however, been sorely missed and runners will welcome the announcement of the new event with open arms. Organisers are hoping that it will take its rightful place in the running calendar once again.
The event will start at the spectacular setting of the Riverside Transport Museum. The route then heads east along the River Clyde passing the Glasgow Science Centre, the Armadillo and the Hydro. Runners will then cross over the Clyde and back via both the ’Squinty Bridge' and the George V. Then it’s into the city centre heading up Buchanan Street to the half way point. The second half of the route will take runners south towards Glasgow Green and the People's Palace, before heading back towards George Square where crowds of spectators will cheer runners home.
A spokesperson for the organisers told runABC Scotland that, amongst others, they are looking to attract runners that perhaps have not done any exercise in a while and are looking for a goal to motivate them. They want women to do something positive together with friends and family and maybe even fundraise for a worthy cause.
We suspect that women across Glasgow and the West of Scotland will answer the call and we look forward to women supporting numerous events across the region as they fall in love with running all over again. It's a great day for running in Scotland and the new Women's 10K will provide a platform for women to take control of their lives and make a positive change.
