Thousands of loyal subjects assemble for Hampton Court Half

Henry VIII and his entourage welcomed 2,768 finishers at the sixth Quicksilver Hampton Court Half Marathon yesterday (Sunday 17 February). With winter sunshine nudging the mercury into double figures, conditions were perfect for a scenic Thameside tour on foot.

The winning times were ahead of runABC South's predicted 70 and 80 minutes by some margin. Christopher Wright (Serpentine, 1:08:49) was more than a minute ahead of Lithuanian athlete Andrius Jaksevicius (Belgrave Harriers, 1:09:53) at the head of proceedings.

There was a sprint for third place, judged to have been won by Greek M40 Dimosthenis Evangelidis (Hercules Wimbledon) from Nick Bester (Herne Hill Harriers), as both shared 1:11:52 gun and 1:11:51 chip times.

This year's women's champion after a battle royal was Phillipa Williams (1:19:38) from Catherine Meyer (Serpentine, 1:19:51) and Josie Hinton (London Heathside, 1:20:04).

Among more than 700 runners who smashed 1:40 in the glorious conditions was our selfie star, Paul Sumerhill (636th, 1:39:11), who paid tribute to the superb Xempo Pacers on Twitter: “Loved Hampton Court Half Marathon this morning. Great weather, good course and fantastic pacing from Phil helped me to a sub-1:40 PB”.

Nearly 1,500 ducked under 2 hours on gun times and the final finisher recorded 3:12:32 as runners relaxed in the sunshine, enjoyed goodies from Eat Natural while donning their bright orange race T-shirts. The mock throne selfie station was well attended as the royal theme was continued in the post race mix zone.
